I have been using Hitachi Deskstar hard drives for a number of years now, but always the ide versions. I bought a new computer at the beginning of January this year, and this one had a 500gb sata drive as standard. I do a lot of home editing of camcorder films, and soon realised I would need more storage. The Deskstar ide drives have proved to be very reliable, so it was the obvious choice for a new sata drive. A quick search on e-bay, and I found a 1tb drive for a bargain price of £48.95 with free delivery. When it arrived, I just fitted the power and data plugs, and that was all it needed. The usual Deskstar quiet running, 32mb cache making for quick data transfer, absolutely perfect for my needs! I would recommend Deskstar to anyone, and will be buying another myself soon, as it wont be long before this one is full, and access to stored data is very quick despite the large capacity. All in all. I doubt there is a better hard drive available!Read full review

When purchased with passed all the SMART tests 100%. Two months later it failed "Reallocated Sectors Count", so would not write or edit some data. You can't fix a SMART test fail, but at least I had a chance to move all the data off before tragedy struck.
I buy these hard drives because they are very reliable and their failure rate is very small compared to other manufacturers. They are usually cheaper than the others so if you can pick on up for anything less than £70 you've got a bargain.
