This is a compact, pocket-size unit with excellent mapping but with some drawbacks. I have used it hiking in the Alps and every path and track seems to be shown. As you move around, the screen moves quickly so it's always easy to pick your direction. The unit is a bit heavy for the pocket, but since no belt clip or lanyard is included I resorted to a piece of string! The screen is very good and I didn't find its small size a limitation. It's easy to read in sunlight and it's easy to zoom in and out. The sensitivity of the touch screen seems to vary - sometimes you need to touch it several times before it reacts and sometimes it's instant. This may be deliberate to avoid accidental changes, but if so, I haven't got it sussed yet! Rechargeable batteries are a must - it eats alkaline batteries in a few hours. Using the "Garmin Connect" app, daily tracks were quickly and easily transferred to an iPad in pretty good detail. I don't think I've used half the things it can do and I would have appreciated a better instruction booklet.Read full review

Great GPS. The altimeter is great and accurate recording my cycle rides, the maps from my old Etrex Legend went right in and worked. The auto archiving feature for logs means you don't miss anything when that 3 hour ride turns into a 6 hour epic. With a case and clip the 30X sits right on top of my backpack for best reception.

Like most Garmin products, you don't get detailed instructions and the best way to find out its features and uses is to scan the forums. Once you've found out how to use the main features, it is an excellent piece of equipment. I use mine on my bike for endurance rides. The fact it takes AA batteries, which last for about 24 hours, means you don't need a charger and can use it for multi-day rides anywhere in Europe. Although it's not really designed for cycling, you can buy a stem mount for it. If you do, make sure you put some masking or helicopter tape over the little piece of rubber designed to stop the gadget jumping off the mount. What that rubber actually does is stop you from being able to remove the Etrex from the mount, hence the masking tape! I've never had it jump off the mount despite cycling up gravel tracks on a road bike. I've recently relied on the Etrex 30x for getting me and my bike back to camp in areas that I don't know at all by scanning the map for the camp/shop/station etc and clicking on that place. It's default is to draw a pretty useless straight line to that point but, if you then exit back to the menu, you can make it take you by road. Again, this aspect is not intuitive (thanks Garmin!) but once you know how to do it, it's priceless. Other features that I recently found, and that will be used alot more in future, are the fact you can change the way it reads grid references to just about any method in the world. Using this feature you can then pintpoint waypoints to an exact 5 square metres of land. You can also give the grid references/ waypoints a title which appears on the map screen so you know what you're looking for. The 30x also enables you to set waypoint alerts so when you're half dead after about 150 miles on your bike, it wakes you up to remind you that your waypoint is 'x' (your chosen distance) miles or km ahead. This saves missing anything you planned to stop for, be it sites, shops or brevet controls. Overall, this is a great little gadget and I have already recommended it to a friend who always relies on other people to get him from A to B.Read full review
