This is now old generation technology that has been greatly overtaken by new features such as built in maps. However all that I needed was a basic electronic compass and also something to point to a destination in case I was caught in thick mist on a mountain side. So this fitted the bill without having to spend many hundreds of pounds on features I didn't need. It took a short while to find a way through the menu to alter settings from Lat Long to OS grid but after that entering waymarks was easy. So far I havn't used it on a longer walk and only tried it around local footpaths so can't comment further, but at first sight it will do what I wanted. Also, can't comment on battery life and low light visibility but others say that isn't a problem for them. It does mean more time spent planning an outing as it could involve setting up many waymarks to provide the protection needed in mist, but thats no bad thing anyway. I would think that this gizmo, when used in conjunction with older skills like map reading, will suit my purpose.Read full review
Took a while to figure out how to enter the co-ordinates, but that was because the seller had left it in a format I'd not come across before, and once I'd figured out how to change it, it was easy. Can take while to enter co-ordinates, and amount of letters allowed seems to be one less than the cache identifier code (I use my GPS exclusively for geocaching)so each waypoint needs renaming, which is also a bit slow. A pop up keyboard, like on a smartphone, would be useful if anyone from Garmin is reading this! Co-ordinates are much easier to enter if you use a cable - unfortunately the one supplied has a very old connector. A new cable is expensive, but an adaptor can be bought reasonably cheaply. Easy to see, accuracy generally good, though can be further out than it says, and can be a bit hit and miss under trees. Doesn't contain the option for maps, so if this is something you want, go for a better model. For caching I use it in conjunction with an iPhone app which is great in the town, but not so good in the country. The lack of map means there is the risk of ending up on the wrong side of a canal, railway line etc as you can't see exactly where it is taking you.Read full review
This is a compact, pocket-size unit with excellent mapping but with some drawbacks. I have used it hiking in the Alps and every path and track seems to be shown. As you move around, the screen moves quickly so it's always easy to pick your direction. The unit is a bit heavy for the pocket, but since no belt clip or lanyard is included I resorted to a piece of string! The screen is very good and I didn't find its small size a limitation. It's easy to read in sunlight and it's easy to zoom in and out. The sensitivity of the touch screen seems to vary - sometimes you need to touch it several times before it reacts and sometimes it's instant. This may be deliberate to avoid accidental changes, but if so, I haven't got it sussed yet! Rechargeable batteries are a must - it eats alkaline batteries in a few hours. Using the "Garmin Connect" app, daily tracks were quickly and easily transferred to an iPad in pretty good detail. I don't think I've used half the things it can do and I would have appreciated a better instruction booklet.Read full review

I purchased this hand held GPS because I wanted to be able to accurately monitor how far I was walking. Also I have become involved in Geo-Cacheing, for which it is a good aide. Not being technically minded, I have found the downloaded instructions complicated to understand,(it did not come with instructions) and difficult to translate into entering information on the instrument. The price I paid for it was very reasonable considering as I was bidding against other people who also wanted it. Overall the screen is clear and easy to read, but I need more time to play around with the controls, to work out how it functions.
Great GPS. The altimeter is great and accurate recording my cycle rides, the maps from my old Etrex Legend went right in and worked. The auto archiving feature for logs means you don't miss anything when that 3 hour ride turns into a 6 hour epic. With a case and clip the 30X sits right on top of my backpack for best reception.

Bought to have a go at Geo-caching. It works well most of the time, but has problems in Central London & under trees due wo weak GPS signals....but a good device to kick of with. One down site is that the interface to connect to a PC is a Serial Cable, so I had to buy a serial to USB converter to connect it and download info from www.geocaching.com
I have had many garmin products and this one is the best so far I think

Once my start point is set up I can wander free as a bird knowing that my Etrex will point me back to my start point(waypoint)when I simply press Goto.No more getting lost and blaming the dog (or the wife if she is with me). This gadget has a lot of extras which I am slowly learning.
