ReviewsThis season has been notable for distinguished translations, especially from ancient Hebrew. Foremost among these is the immense new version of the Book of Psalms. In an act of great courage, Rabbis Rozenberg (formerly of Hebrew Union Coll.) and Zlotowitz (a senior scholar at the Union of American Hebrew Congregations) have undertaken a wholly new and convincingly Jewish translation of the Psalms, already familiar to English-language speakers through the Authorized Version. As translators, they succeed wonderfully, giving these poems the authority of antiquity as well as a modern clarity. ("You sweep them away like a flood, they sink into deep sleep,/ In the morning they are like grass sprouting new.") The notes are thorough and intelligent. Highly recommended.
