This is an unusual but wonderful story with terrific performances from Anthony Hopkins and Anne Bancroft in the lead roles. Bancroft is a New York writer who loves to read/collect classic English books. To this end she writes to a bookshop in 1949, (84 Charing Cross Rd), and so begins a friendship that stretches for many years. Hopkins plays the book shop manager who corresponds with Bancroft through the years in a story of great charm. Although they never meet, they have a sort of love affair through their passion for books and language. It may sound odd, but it really does work, the attention to the period detail and the way people used to live/behave is charming and told with great affection. This is a beguiling tale, beautifully made and I recommend it thoroughly to anyone who loves quality films.Read full review
