"Company Commander" by Charles MacDonald is one of the best small unit histories ever written. Captain MacDonald writes about his time as a infantry officer in Italy and Northwestern Europe during WW2. MacDonald is truthful and pulls no punches. He admits his mistakes and learned from them. He describes in detail the harsh conditions in which he and his Soldiers fought and what it took to be a combat officers in WW2. This should be required reading in Officer Basic Course and Staff Officer Courses because Staff Officers forget who they work for.

One of the best WW2 memoir I've ever read. The true epic story of an infantry company commander from the Battle of the Bulge till the end of the war. Well written and easy to read. The added map is a great help understanding the tactical choices of that officer. A true bookshelf must for the WW2 buff.
Awesome portrayal from an officer's perspective
