FINE VINTAGE PERFORMANCE BUT POOR QUALITY TRANSFER
This 1950s mono recording of one of the greatest G&S opera is very like the D'Oyly Carte's later 1960s stereo version - the same conductor taking the music at largely the same pace. The later recording, though, has full dialogue, which this doesn't. I don't always want to sit through the dialogue, so was seeking a good music-only alternative.
This one could be it - the cast is generally very good - but I can't recommend this issue of it, despite its very low price. It seems to have been transferred from rather crackly vinyl LPs, and at one point during the Peers' Entrance there seems to be a slight needle-jump.
I've since discovered that Naxos also have put out these 1950s D'Oyly Carte recordings, and have bought their PATIENCE, which has none of the shortcomings I mention.
