I haven't yet finished this book but if you were a musical teen in the 50's this is a great read.
Written a bit like a jumble sale - there is stuff all over the place - but like a jumble sale it works.
It is alive and vital - buzzing with energy. Full of interesting snippets of information and wonderful old press cuttings and promo material and very entertaining, I already know that I will read this many times over.
No sycophant, the author sometimes pulls no punches and a strong vein of truth seems to run through the narrative which rings somehow true.
I was lucky enough to meet John Firminger many times when I was in country and rockabilly in the 70's and 80's and I know what a great fan and musician he is. So anything written or contributed to by him will always have that enthusiasm and integrity I associate with him. Spencer Lee is clearly of a similar nature.
So much content it keeps me riveted and reading throughout. Donegan is portrayed as the flamboyant and somewhat abrasive character that he no doubt could be. A great entertainer and innovator who helped change the music scene and was always well loved.
A must have book for Donegan fans and 50's music fans in the UK.
