The railway came to Westerham in 1881 and served the town for 80 years. The line was meant to continue to Oxted, but this never happened. In 1960 the Southern Region stated that it wished to close the branch. In May 1961 the Central Transport Users Consultatitive Committee recommended that the branch was open as a social necessity.
