Like the American West, rural Argentina--known for gauchos, mate, and the pampa--forms a part of the collective national imagination. Historian and editor Saenz Quesada joins forces here with magazine photographer Verstraeten (both are native Argentineans) to profile 24 estancias in ten provinces. They range from simple farmhouses to Victorian country homes, reflecting both the period in which they were built (most in the 19th century, but some earlier) and the immigrant heritage of the various owners. Verstraeten's color photographs depict the geography of rural Argentina as equally varied.
