I really enjoyed the style of humour used in this book. People say "you have as many lives as you read books" ant that one is great to live. I recommend it particularly for teenager and young adults. (fantasyyyyy)

Great start to a very good trilogy. The Tsurani empire is very like feudal Japan, so if you're into the culture, this will appeal to you. If you are already a fan of Raymond Feist, this explains what's going on during the Magician book to one Tsurani house. Mara is beset by foes from every direction but a mixture of cunning and luck helps her rise to power. Well written, obviously from a female perspective and with co-writer Janny Wurts it definitely feels a different read to Feist's other stuff. I highly recommend it.
This is the start of a great trilogy, but it helps if you have already read 'The Magician' by Raymond E Feist as this sets the scene for the worlds in which the trilogy is set. The characterisation is brilliant and the plot matures across each book. You really don't want to stop reading once you have started. If you don't like epic fantasy, this is probably not the book for you, but even if you can take it or leave it, then the extra insights into court plots between great houses and military strategy give the trilogy extra life and interest. Despite the fantasy nature of the book, there are some obvious drawings on the society of medieval Japan which actually add to the interest and drama. 'Shogun' fans could find this aspect interesting. I would thoroughly recommend the book, the trilogy and 'The Magician' as good reads with gripping plotlines and well drawn characters.Read full review
Read this years ago, and didn't realise I'd forgotton most of it! Raymond E. Feist is always a good read - though I've yet to read any Jany Wurts, from this book I think she will be just as good as Raymond. Well worth the £3.50 from World of Books!
