About this product

Product Information

Ralph Waldo Emerson was one of America's most influential thinkers and indisputably the central figure of the American Renaissance of the mid-19th century. His essay Nature is considered to be the founding document for the transcendentalist movement, and his influence can be seen in the writings of Whitman, Thoreau, Melville, and others. How to Write about Ralph Waldo Emerson offers valuable paper-topic suggestions, clearly outlined strategies on how to write a strong essay, and an insightful introduction by Harold Bloom on writing about Emerson. This new volume is designed to help students develop their analytical writing skills and critical comprehension of the author and his major works.

  • A fine book. Not only for it's stated purpose, but for new readers of Emerson, and all who have been reading Emerson — in my case, five decades!

This book – written with great clarity – is as far as it is possible to get from the general run of 'student help' books. The author does not give answers, but asks explorative and pertinent questions—but without answering them. On this basis, it is up to the students (and indeed scholars) to explore the stimulating observations provided by the author. But I have not yet done the book justice: with a chapter on essay writing, and explorations of some of Emerson's most famous essays and addresses it is incomparable. We are exceedingly fortunate in having a great critical heritage in Emerson studies – especially from American academics – but to have a book such as this – concentrating with great specificity on individual works, is nothing short of wonderful. Even those who do not intend to write about Emerson, and have only just started reading him, would find this book of tremendous help in understanding this most unique of writers, who none the less is not easy to understand. Idiosyncratic is not the right word, but the reader new to him needs to understand the man—and this is not possible simply by reading his works.
