Product Information

Practical guidelines for designing and deploying a scalable BGP routing architecture Practical design tips proven in the field with large-scale networks In-depth coverage of advanced BGP topics to help networking professionals design a complex BGP routing architecture Extensive configuration examples and comprehensive real-world case studies demonstrate design and implementation techniques and solutions Step-by-step route reflection and confederation migration strategies Effective techniques for BGP policy control Detailed guidelines for increasing iBGP scalability Up-to-date coverage of BGP features, including BGP performance tuning, Multiprotocol BGP, MPLS VPN, IPv6, and multicast BGP. The Border Gateway Protocol (BGP) is one of the most widely deployed protocols in networks today and is the de facto routing protocol in the Internet. BGP is a flexible protocol, in that a variety of options are available to network designers and engineers. Furthermore, extensions and implementation enhancements make BGP a powerful and yet complex tool. BGP Design and Implementation examines the challenges for both the service provider and enterprise customers and provides practical guidelines and a design framework for each. It is organized around practical advice and tips, rather than concepts and protocols, on many advanced topics that you can readily use. Emphasis is placed on providing extensive examples, case studies, and step-by-step implementation procedures. BGP improvements and new features recently incorporated into Cisco IOS(r) Software are covered in depth. This book concludes by taking a close look at recent extensions to Multiprotocol BGP, including MPLS VPN, interdomain multicast, IPv6, and CLNS. You learn how each technology relies on BGP and how you should deploy them. From cover to cover, this book remains focused on practical design advice and real-world implementation guidelines. Randy Zhang, Ph.D. and CCIE(r) No. 5659, is a network consulting engineer at Cisco Systems(r) Advanced Services (AS), supporting Cisco(r) strategic service provider and enterprise customers. He has helped many of these customers in large-scale BGP and MPLS designs, migrations, and implementations. Prior to joining the AS group, Randy was a senior software QA engineer on IP routing and MPLS for Cisco IP DSL Switch series, among other projects. Randy has published many technical and scientific papers and articles. Micah Bartell, CCIE No. 5069, is a network consulting engineer at Cisco Systems. Micah is a member of the ISP Experts team in Advanced Services, providing support to Cisco strategic service provider and enterprise customers. Micah is a recognized expert in the area of large-scale IP network design, with a strong focus on BGP, IS-IS, and IP multicast. Micah is involved in standards work through the International Standards Organization (ISO) and the Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF). Micah most recently served as editor for ISO/IEC IS 10589.
