This appears to be a book written with a pro-Christian view. The author says the Christian Church brought learning to Britain (and Europe). That is utterly false. Nowhere does the author tell us that pagan philosophy and learning was extinguished by the church, in particular by the emperor Justinian. Why does the author think the middle ages were known as the Dark Ages? The only learning came from monks who set up monasteries but all they did was learn to write Latin so that they could copy bibles for people. That is not bringing learning to Britain, as the author must know. I am very cross with the distortions in this book, as I paid good money for it and expected it to be neutral and without bias. The Christian Church is portrayed here in such a good light, at the expense of telling us how the Church managed the land and the workers were almost slaves to the church. This is not a factual historical account.Read full review
