Peter Hook, a key figure in two of Manchester’s greatest bands, digs his hands into his pockets and surveys the exterior of the city’s Haçienda Apartments building. On this site on Whitworth Street, during the Eighties and Nineties, stood a nightclub – the Haçienda – which in many ways defined Manchester as Europe’s leading city of pop culture. Hook gazes wistfully up at the curved red-brick façade, a loose imitation of the old building, which was demolished in 2002. “It’s a bit like a graveyard,” he says. “If I want a melancholy evening and some fond memories, this is my focal point.”
Xmas pressie, will hopefully be a good read! I've seen plenty of tv programmes on the manchester scene and I used to teach Hooky's niece a few years back. I always liked the way he promoted Salford as opposed to being a Manc. Few people outside the north west know that Salford is a city within the connurbation of Manchester within Greater Manchester. Greater Manchester, great at what, rain?!
