When one gets hooked on a writer for his narrative style and comfortably readable English, one tends to fall onto his other books. Gervase Phinn is an excellent story teller, not just by dint of being an educator and a specialist in the language but also for being open to those experiences around him with a marvellous sense of seeing the humour. Teachers are by and large of this disposition and staffroom humour is usually made of this, but it takes insight and skill to come across as humanely and as coherently as this school inspector, and to commit the whole to so many words of writing. His books are not only a celebration of teaching but bring out those precious phases of childhood and adolescence where the students world is shared very sympatethically by those truly dedicated to education. I don't have to wonder whether such books go down well with readers outside the world of schools. My friends from other walks of life expressed as much enjoyment for having been through the Dales books, and chuckled about them in our lighter moments together.Read full review
