This catalogue accompanies the first major show of Fahlstrom's work in the UK at BALTIC Characterised by an aesthetic of game-play and interactivity, Oyvind Fahlstrom's genre-transcending creative output embraced painting and drawing, poetry and manifestos, film, happenings and sound art. In his cartographic paintings and three-dimensional floating assemblages, the visual iconography of underground comics and popular cartoons was combined with dense annotation and symbolic figures from films and magazines, to form a poetic and impassioned comment on the geo-political events of the day, from global capitalism to the Vietnam War. The show reflects the breadth of his practice, from early works like Opera (1952-3), to the monumental paintings and installations such as The Little General (Pinball Machine) (1967/8) and Meatball Curtain (1969) for which he is perhaps best known.
