  • A useful historical snapshot of Surrey butterflies.

The book is an excellent digest of information of the butterflies of Surrey up to 1995 and I have found it very useful for historic information and the list of locations where butterflies were reported. I was interested to see how my memories of butterfly species' locations and abundance from the late 60s and early 70s matched with the information in the book. Recent publication of an updated guide for Surrey allows comparison with this one to assess the changes in species present and their numbers: sadly a significant number of species have declined and even become extinct in the Surrey area since this book was published. Nonetheless for city dwellers and townies Surrey is easily accessed by private and public transport and a good place to visit for a bit of butterfly watching.
