The cover design on this edition leaves a lot to be desired and would have put me off buying the book had I not already read it many years ago. It's a 'cracking yarn' set at the outbreak of the Indian Mutiny and features a host of well depicted characters who find themselves besieged by mutinous sepoys. That's not giving any of the plot away, given the title of the book. The Times rated the book as 'A novel of quite outstanding quality'. The New Statesman goes further: 'For a novel to be witty is one thing, to tell a good story is another, to be serious is yet another, but to be all three is surely enough to make it a masterpiece'.
