'The Pillow Book' is the private meditations, on every subject under the sun, of a Japanese court lady, an attendant of the Empress, in the Heian Period of Japan, which lay in the years 990-1000s. It was completed in about 1002 AD. The book gives a vivid picture of upper-class Japanese life and culture at that time. It was clearly a very sophisticated society, although peasant life must have been very different. (Peasants are seldom mentioned in the book.)
