This first book by Mark Shand tells of his interest in the Indian Elephant and his first Journey across India on Tara whom he buys at an Elephant sale. He learns how to be a Mahout, an elephant keeper, and falls in love with her quirky personality.. but also realises the sadness associated with the lives of these beasts of burden..
