A great little book, easy to dip in an out of and confirming my inclinations to be a curmudgeonly old bugger. I wouldn't have agreed with much of this in my teens, but staring 70 in the face it was like someone had read my mind and put my thoughts on paper. Though the film world is outside my experience, that was pretty interesting too. Before I read this book I'd not read any of his other stuff - I was attracted merely by his opposition to political correctness, the EU, Tony Blair, etc. However, it led me on to read the Flashman series, which I read one after another. I bought this copy to give to an equally curmudgeonly friend who looks like having his mobility limited for a bit and who I hope will enjoy dipping in and out of this book if he finds time heavy on him.

What a wonderful book by George MacDonald Fraser (GMF); a masterpiece of biography, interspersed with his view of what’s wrong and what has gone astray in many aspects of today’s society. This book is biographical, and unlike many of today’s biographies/autobiographies the reader isn’t bombarded with self pitying whinging, but treated to an honest account of the authors life; at home, in the Army, journalist, screen writer and author of the best books I have ever read, namely the Flashman series, the McAuslan stories (under three separate titles) and numerous others, all worth reading. As mentioned; intertwined with the biographical memories are GMF’s acerbic views on many areas of 21st Century life; many may now be buried in society’s consciousness and grudgingly accepted, but this hasn’t stopped GMF offering his forthright view on such diverse topics as Political Correctness, Racism, Politicians (Blair, Bush et al), Government, TV, Sport (in particular football), Europe, Journalism, Feminism and the Army. Being of a certain age it is hard to disagree with any of the sentiments, which is what makes this book such an enjoyable read. I would recommend this book to anyone of any age; being a huge fan of GMF I am probably erring on the side of bias, but for a straightforward, no-nonsense account of many of the idiocies endemic in British society today, please give this a read.Read full review
