A chapter is devoted to each country, while the introductory chapter presents a comparative overview. • A fascinating book that may change your understanding of WWII.

This is a superbly informative book, which for many readers will change their perspective on the Second World War. The first chapter is so helpful in clarfifying events from an economic perspective. The book looks at the economies of UK, USA, Germany, Japan, Italy and the USSR. The book is an international collaboration bringing together the latest economic and historical research. Although fascinating to some, other readers more used to pictures of air attacks and tales of derring-do will find this book unremittingly dull, but it takes all types to make a world! There are lots of statistics and a welcome discussion of variations in estimates from different authors and how they occur. The discussion is mostly morally dispassionate which, when we are dealing with the atrocities carried out by a number of combatants in this conflict, some readers will find this refreshing;others distasteful. The different chapters are written by different authors and this is a little frustrating as it is hard to make like-for-like comparisons. To be fair, it is probably hard to make like-for-like comparisons of wartime economies. I particulrly enjoyed the way the book looked back to WWI, the Great Depression and forward to post-war recovery. Some readers may consider there is bias in some authors who write about their own country. I felt the lack of a conclusions chapter to cover this was unfortunate. To get good value from this book the reader needs to have a pretty good basic understanding of the fundamentals of economics (if you don't know what Keynsianism is, you will be lost in this book) and an overall idea of what happened in WWII because the book doesn't cover this.
