This book provides a concise account of modern inorganic chemistry. Prime emphasis is on the principles and trends in the chemistry of the elements. Throughout the text there is a series of worked examples - 100 in total, which are fully integrated into the discussion, illustrating important facts and ideas. The layout is clear, with over 400 simple diagrams and important principles highlighted. These, along with the simple language used throughout, and the extensive cross referencing, produce a lucid description of the material. At the end of each chapter there is a series of important points. These provide the dual function of self test and summary of the chapters. These are complemented by a series of model answers to University standard questions-30 in total, which encompass, in the broader sense, the material discussed and also give some measure of the standard of answer required in undergraduate examinations. The content of the book is split into four sections. Firstly the basics of structure, bonding and reactivity are considered; reference to these are made throughout the remaining chapters. This is followed by a unified descriptive approach of modern main-group and transition metal chemistry. Finally the last section deals with special topics, most notably inorganic spectroscopy . It is designed for all students undertaking a first degree in chemistry and it should appeal to non-chemistry specialist students who have to complete an organic chemistry course as part of their degree requirement.
