Desolation Island. A sequel to The Mauritius Command (1970), which was the opening salvo in the Capt. Jack Aubrey series about the Royal Navy during the Napoleonic Wars. Once again Jack's dear friend Dr. Stephen Maturin is also aboard, so they have the opportunity to indulge themselves in their cello and violin duets.

About this product

Product Information

Patrick O'Brian's Aubrey-Maturin tales are widely acknowledged to be the greatest series of historical novels ever written. Commissioned to rescue Governor Bligh of Bounty fame, Captain Jack Aubrey and his friend and surgeon, Stephen Maturin, sail the Leopard to Australia with a hold full of convicts. Among them is a beautiful and dangerous spy - and a treacherous disease which decimates the crew. The ingredients of a wonderfully powerful and dramatic O'Brian novel are heightened by descriptive writing of rare quality. Nowhere in contemporary prose have the majesty and terror of the sea been more effectively rendered than in the thrilling chase through an Antarctic storm in which Jack's ship, under-manned and out-gunned, is the quarry not the hunter.

  • Jack Aubrey novels of Patrick O Brian

If you have not read any of these novels I envy you, what a wonderful treat Awaits you. Start at the beginning with Master and Commander and you Will have the pleasure of about eighteen more stories to come. The author Is probably the greatest novelist of the 20th century. The subject is Nelson -s navy and the war at sea , but much much more than that.

  • Realistic and exceptional

5th book in the master and commander series by Patrick O'Brian who according to the Sunday Times is the best historical novelist of all time. I find the novels compelling, easy reading but don't take my word the many professional reviews have already said it all. There are 20 novels in the series and I intend to read them all.

  • Yup. The island is desolate.

O' Brian is a master of fiction. But this is not fiction alone - the series is based around real historical events.
