Product Information

A book to read and reread, this reissue brings back to print an unforgettable romance and a timeless masterpiece. Abandoned pregnant and penniless on the teeming streets of London, sixteen-year-old Amber St. Clare uses her wits, beauty and courage to climb to the highest position a woman could achieve in Restoration England - that of favourite mistress of the Merry Monarch himself, Charles II. From whores and highwaymen to courtiers and noblemen, from the Great Plague and the Fire of London to the intimate passions of ordinary - and extraordinary - men and women, Amber experiences it all. But throughout her trials and escapades, she remains, in her heart, true to the one man she really loves, the one man she can never have ...

  • A story of love and adventure in Restoration England

This is the story of Amber St Clair and her love for Bruce - a returning Cavalier after the Restoration of King Charles II. After meeting Bruce at the village inn, she follows him to London. This is the beginning of her adventure, leading her to become one of the king's mistresses despite loving Bruce. I believe that the book was considered rather "naughty" when it was first published. I named my daughter Amber in 1974 and one of the hospital staff remarked "fancy calling her Amber. I hope she doesnt live up to her name"! I bought this book for her and she enjoyed it very much. Highly recommend.

  • Forever Amber

I've waited so long to read this novel and enjoyed every minute of this very well written story, didn't want to put it down. Can see why it was banned at its first time of release but found the characters charming & fascinating.

  • Super

Read this for the first time when I was fourteen and I am now 70. I am enjoying it as much, if not more, than I did then. A real page turner set in the times of Charles ll. It’s one of those books you don’t want to end.

  • Forever Amber lives on forever

It is personally special to me as I read it when I was 15 and now I’m 73 but Amber still comes back to life just as she was then the book never dates as it was very well written back in 1944 and Kathleen Winsor captured all the every day life of the ordinary people then as well as Royalty life in Charles II reign. I can still not put this book down, still compelled to keep reading its as fresh as it was when I read it years ago, and I am a reader that never reads a book twice .
