This large coffee table tome delves into the Habsburg legacy and later the Dual Monarchy, and their impossible task of forming unity between many disparate peoples: Hungarians, Austrians, Czechs, Ruthenians, Germans, Poles, Romanians, Slovaks and others, all of whose customs and histories pulled in many different directions over centuries. The Dual Monarchy was the last chance to solve these unsolveable problems and was eventually swept away by the killing fields of WW1.
Today, Austria is a fully neutral independent landlocked country, whilst Hungary goes its own way and is not neutral (per se).
So many lavish paintings, illustrations and photos -all of which are illuminating- and oodles of text make this a beautifully crafted read.
