  • A good book for wannabe historians

As part of a series of books that concentrates on either a pre-prescribed area or a specific county and has grown to well over 60 volumes showing railway locations as they were at some time in the 20th Century, comparing or contrasting with a view of the similar place within a year or two of publication, this volume is the third book covering South Wales. It makes a bold attempt at covering the railway system around the Swansea area and because of the sheer complexity of the local railway network, the book would have benefited from a few more maps. The simplified map at the beginning of the volume is barely adequate as it can only give a sketched overall idea of what and whose railways went where. The book does however, provide a fascinating view of how things were before the great railway holocaust of the 1960s, but where no trace whatsoever of railway exists, words alone could mention this particular fact rather than a picture of a car park or an anonymous housing estate or supermarket. Here then is a good book for wannabe historians and a useful "brick in the wall" for historians of the overall railway scene.
