  • How to deal with life in the face of adversity.

This is a beautifully written and gripping tale of how young West Indian immigrants came to London in the 1950s determined to make a good life for themselves. The adversities are great, the spirits are high and the fun is exhilarating . The use of the patois is easy to understand and contributes to the authenticity of the story.Although it's a short novel, the reality of post-war London is well drawn .It seems that a lot of fun was to be had in those bleak days, especially for these young West Indians who were hustling to survive. If you're interested in post-war London this novel will make you laugh and cry in equal measure.
