About this product

Product Information

This solemn, rhythmic intonation of the shipping forecast on BBC radio is as familiar as the sound of Big Ben chiming the hour. Since its first broadcast in the 1920s it has inspired poems, songs and novels in addition to its intended objective of warning generations of seafarers of impending storms and gales. Sitting at home listening to the shipping forecast can be a cosily reassuring experience. There's no danger of a westerly gale eight, veering southwesterly increasing nine later (visibility poor) gusting through your average suburban living room, blowing the Sunday papers all over the place and startling the cat. Yet familiar though the sea areas are by name, few people give much thought to where they are or what they contain. In ATTENTION ALL SHIPPING Charlie Connelly wittily explores the places behind the voice, those mysterious regions whose names seem often to bear no relation to conventional geography. Armchair travel will never be the same again.

  • Fun and entertainment on every page, around the coastline of the British Isles

This book is so entertaining, that i had to purchase a second copy, to replace another, which ive misplaced. Ive searched high and low for it, and i know its somewhere in the house, but i still cant find it. The main reason the book is such a delight to read, is that the author Charlie Connelly, writes in such an entertaining manner, about places we have heard of, but probably will never visit. North and South Utsire is as bleak and hostile as it gets, this windswept island just off the coast of Norway, where everything is outrageously expensive, like all Norwegian countries. Im sure most of us have heard the shipping forecast once or twice in our lives, can name one or two coastal waters, but what are they like to visit, and are they a tourist hot spot, or place to avoid at all costs. The book won various awards, when it was first released back in 2004, and its one of those books, that you cant really put down, when you have started reading it.

  • A unique view of the weather!

We've all heard the shipping forecast, and this book brings some of the areas that we only every hear on the forecast to life. Funny in a slow-burning to laugh out loud way, this will make all the difference the next time you hear "this is the shipping forecast".
