InThe History Boys, Alan Bennett evokes the special period and place that the sixth form represents in an English boy's life. Alan Bennett. An unruly bunch of bright, funny sixth-form (or senior) boys in a British boys' school are, as such boys will be, in pursuit of sex, sport, and a place at a good university, generally in that order.

Product Information

In Alan Bennett's new play, staff room rivalry and the anarchy of adolescence provoke insistent questions about history and how you teach it; about education and its purpose. • Probably more interesting than the film

I haven't finished it yet, but the introduction about Alan Bennett's school and university days is very interesting and entertaining, as is the opening of the play showing attitudes to education. I don't think there were league tables as such in the eighties when the play is set, so I think he might have done a little more research about the era and the system in State grammar schools which, I don't think generally brought students back for a term after sitting their A Levels to prepare of Oxbridge... Even the public (private) school I taught in from 1987 only gave extra classes during the regular school day to students deemed fit to apply to Oxford and Cambridge.

  • I love a bit of Bennett

A lovely read. I thought the end was overly neat though. Lives cannot be summed up in 1 line.

  • Brilliant Play by a Brilliant Playwright

Loved the play itself however didn’t realise that the book had notes written in it. The quality of the book itself was fine but the notes were a little distracting at times.

  • Useful for those who've seen it on TV and who want to study it further.

prefer the film version tho' good to have the script.

  • Great value

My daughter is studying this play for her A level. Copy was very good value for money. Some notes inside, but she will probably make more. Thanks
