Born in Canada, Smart came to London at the beginning of the 1930s and these journals cover a period of extensive travel and profound personal change. From the pages emerges a passionate, vibrant, extravagant personality, at the same time subject to lethargy and self-doubt. By the 40s, when this volume closes, Elizabeth Smart had met George Barker and had developed a distinctive literary style.
