    Powerful novel.

I wanted tore read parts especially relating to thyroid deficiency in order to educate people who left me to die when my thyroid scores were off the chart. I had very sou d reasons for revisiting The Citadel. Myxodoema is causing mortality. Around 50 percent of patients will not recover.

    Effective

Book content is excellent. Book quality however is quite poor. It is an ex library book that has been well used. Some pages repaired with yellowing Sellotape whilst others are almost coming adrift. I am hoping all pages are intact as it is a book club nominated read that I must complete.

  • Old story but a cracking read.

A good story told in an engaging style. Reflects the lives of those of the South Wales valleys just before the creation of the NHS. The lives of the persons in the area & later London well drawn. The interplay between the high principled standards of Dr Andrew Manson whose upbringing sees him striving for success & recognition but brought low by material things. Throughout his ever caring wife, Christine holds to her beliefs and eventually after estrangement & over reliance on material things they both find peace. The cruel twist is at this moment of happiness tradegy strikes both personally & professionally. However Manson, with the help of his long lasting friend, Phillip Denny, wins through. A totally engaging & absorbing book with infusions of medical detail. An old book but a cracking read!

  • Good holiday read

Brought it for something to read on the beach, very compelling and easy to follow. Was meant to dump it but my wife has started reading it and so it’s found it’s way home

  • Great!

Good quality book, amazing story which gives the backdrop of medical practice prior to the NHS. Mandatory reading for all medical staff in my opinion!

  • The Citadel by A J Cronin

Read this book originally in the 1960s. Found it so absorbing and vivid in its description of a young doctor overcoming prejudice and institutional inertia. Now , once again, rekindling that initial admiration for A J Cronin’s literary genius.

  • Good book

Seems like a good book, the pages are very yellowed and a bit shabby but easily readable

  • The Citadel, is an enjoyable story of a doctors career.

Ok this is an old secondhand book , it’s my reading book groups choice this month, and my library didn’t have a copy available, so this was the next cheapest choice! Very pleased

  • Favourite book

This book was for a lady dying in a hospice and it is her favourite book. She enjoyed having it read aloud to her.
