In 1025, the Byzantine Empire was the greatest power in the Mediterranean and Near East; in 1204 its capital, Constantinople, was captured by the Western Christian warriors of the Fourth Crusade. Although Byzantine rule was later restored, and the ever-shrinking Empire held out against Islam for a further 200 years, the political ascendancy of Byzantium was over. This is an account of the period leading up to the Fourth Crusade, a turning point for the whole medieval world. This edition has been revised to feature a decade of new scholarship; new commentaries on the original sources and new introductions to the sections in which they are structured; and an increased amount of quotation from writers and witnesses of the time.
