About this product

Product Information

War and Peace is a vast epic centred on Napoleon's war with Russia. While it expresses Tolstoy's view that history is an inexorable process which man cannot influence, he peoples his great novel with a cast of over five hundred characters. Three of these, the artless and delightful Natasha Rostov, the world-weary Prince Andrew Bolkonsky and the idealistic Pierre Bezukhov illustrate Tolstoy's philosophy in this novel of unquestioned mastery. This translation is one which received Tolstoy's approval. AUTHOR: Leo Tolstoy (1828 -1910) is one of the major figures in world literature, and 'War and Peace' is in contention to be considered the greatest novel ever written. But this is only one of his memorable works: 'Anna Karenina' certainly equals it in popularity, and his shorter works, such as 'The Death of Ivan Ilyich' are considered excellent.

  • Well worth it

Having watched the original BBC drama dvd I wanted to read the book to see how accurate it was. I am currently 450 pages through and am not disappointed. I think it may help that I know the story already but I still find it a compelling read. My only criticism is having to look elsewhere in the book for the English translation of long passages in French. Thankfully there are not many of these and I have decided to finish the book and then look up the translations later.

  • Compelling read.

Thoroughly enjoying reading War and Peace during lock down. Beautifully written. History, romance, war, peace and intrigue are all displayed on this compelling story. Only reading twenty pages a day to pace myself which will take eight weeks as it comprises of over twelve hundred pages. The Russian surnames take some getting into but well worth the effort.
