About this product

Product Information

From renowned UK comics writer Pat Mills (Marshal Law, Slaine) and legendary artist Joe Colquhoun (Johnny Red) comes a truly classic piece of British comics history, by turns thrilling, humorous and horrifying. In 1916, Charley Bourne lies about his age to enlist and fight on the battlefields of France. But thoughts of glory and patriotism are swept aside by the bloody artillery barrage of horror and needless sacrifice amidst the trenches of the First World War. Rich in the detailed minutiae of the terror-punctuated existence of a 'Tommy', Charley's War features a brand new introduction and 'director's commentary' by Pat Mills, a cultural history of the comic, and an essay on the Battle of the Somme.

Seeing the Remembrance Day-themed cover, it took me a while to be certain that this was the action-packed comic strip I used to read in Battle Action as a lad. But it is, and to meet my six-year-old self in its pages was a strange experience. Its vivid recreation of the WWI trenches is something that has stayed with me all my life, and which I have still never seen surpassed in any art form. I also now know that, for a strip of this type, it was pretty well-researched and authentic in the details. There are some notable exceptions, such as the much-used word 'Jerry' which didn't come in until WWII and strikes an incongruous note. It manages to combine intense action with an overall anti-war message, but at times the combination is a strain. When all's said and done this was a comic strip for boys, meant to be exciting, and so the note of sanctimoniousness - brought out even more in the writer's notes supplied in this volume - can be pushed too far. He obviously saw himself as making a political statements; but this is, necessarily, a heroic world in which the status of the characters is proportional to the strength of their chins (actually, I think the platoon sergeant owes something to Windsor Davies in It Ain't Half Hot Mum).
