Peter Clarke brilliantly challenges the commonly held view of Britain in the twentieth century as a nation in decline. Adopting a wide perspective he examines the political. He looks at how jobs and prices food and shelter and education and welfare shaped society and explores such areas as architecture sport and popular culture.
This is a very readable account of Great Britain's history in the Twentieth Century, covering such areas as literature and the arts, popular entertainment, develpments in housing and transport as well as political and economic history. I had only a few criticisms. No reference is made to the Chanak crisis which was the principal cause of the break up of Lloyd George's government in 1922 and there are one or two grammatical inaccuracies, e.g. "different to" for "different from" and "less " for "fewer ".
