This is a one-volume reference text aimed at organic chemists throughout their training and practice. The editors of this edition aim to integrate mechanistic theory with strategy and methodology of synthesis, and to reflect the development of a philosophy of organic synthesis. Much of this edition has been revised and updated. The book starts with a review of the concept of organic synthesis and then deals with codes of practice and responsibility, giving a summary of the hazards encountered in the organic chemistry laboratory. The section dealing with experimental techniques has been updated on the availability of new equipment and applicability of new techniques. New information on air-sensitive compounds has been added and the chromatography section now includes details on preparative techniques of flash-chromatography, dry-column flash chromatography and the chromatron and fuller data on high performance liquid chromatography. More details have been added to the spectroscopic section and the chapter on solvents and reagents now includes new reagents such as alkyllithiums, boranes and new oxidants and reductants, while the chapter on the investigation and characterization of organic compounds has a new emphasis laid on achieving an understanding of chemical behaviour in association with spectroscopic features, correlating this information to provide a definitive structural elucidation. In addition, approximately 100 new experiments have been introduced into the preparative chapters. These deal with asymmetric syntheses, protection methods, the use of air- and moisture-sensitive reagents, the wider use of phase transfer reactions, silicon, phosphorus, boron and titanium reagents.
