About this product

Product Information

Autumn, 1541: Following the uncovering of a plot against his throne in Yorkshire, King Henry VIII has set out on a spectacular Progress to the North to overawe his rebellious subjects there. Accompanied by a thousand soldiers, the cream of the nobility, and his fifth wife Catherine Howard, the King is to attend an extravagant submission of the local gentry at York. Already in the city are lawyer Matthew Shardlake and his assistant Jack Barak. As well as assisting with legal work processing petitions to the King, Shardlake has reluctantly undertaken a special mission - to ensure the welfare of an important but dangerous conspirator being returned to London for interrogation. But the murder of a local glazier involves Shardlake in deeper mysteries, connected not only to the prisoner in York Castle but to the royal family itself. As the King and the Great Progress arrive in the city, Barak stumbles upon a terrifying secret, and a chain of events unfolds that will leave Shardlake to face the most terrifying fate a subject of Henry VIII can fear... his own imprisonment in the Tower of London.

  • A good read difficult to put down

I have read a few of this author's books but I found that so far this has been the most compelling especially with reference to the theory that Henry VIII may not have been the rightful King. This theory ties in with another great book The Daughter of Time by Josephine Tey, a brilliant investigation into the history (fictional) of that time.

  • It's a great whodunit, I learned so much social history, shame I didn't learn it at school.

If you enjoy historical novels, you will love this. If gives so much information about life in King Henry Vlll time. They were very brutal times and the poor people suffered much after the dissolution of the monasteries. The king did nothing to help them, he seemed only interested in a massing wealth for himself and his cronies. Once you start it's hard to put down. It's best to start with book 1, Dissolution and go through them in the order he has written. I'm now reading Heartstone.

  • Good tudor period story

Love the Shardlake series but very disappointed in the quality of this paperback. I made a cover for it as to be honest did not want to touch the book much. Having said that I am enjoying reading it but feel I need to wash my hands afterwards.

  • A must read if you have any interest in history.

A 14th century hunchback lawyer!! At one point an assistant to Thomas Cromwell, makes compelling reading. I now have the complete series, roll on the next book.

  • Sovereign

A good read if you like a detective story, with the twist that it is set in the time of Henry 8th. If you like history then the two blend together well.

  • More from C.J. Sonsom please!

I have read this book and all in the Shardlake series. I found them so interesting - if not a bit 'Gorey' in places, but that was the Tudor era! Loved the historical content and the location of Shardlake's office at Grays Inn as I used to work around that area - but not in Tudor times of course- thank goodness! Hope he writes more of these - can't wait! 😊
