VMPS STIIa\r Loudspeaker System; Superior Performance Upgrade !!
For the past 10 years, my pair of VMPS super tower 2a ribbon edition loudspeakers had a drastic loss of low end response from 20hz to 45hz in a dedicated listening room.
VMPS always recommended a 1900 cubic foot listening room but ours fell short at 1600 cubic foot so these speakers never properly loaded in this smaller listening space plus the room boundary effects had a stark cutoff in the low bass output from this fine loudspeaker system.
The factory installed 15" passive radiator had a very stiff suspension which effected the Qms & Qts of the active drivers. Since the foam surrounds on the bass, mid-bass drivers and passive radiator were replaced by the previous owner, the incorrect replacement surrounds were definitely not matched.
SO an upgrade to the drivers was mandated.
Replaced the 12" & 15" original active woofers with a Qts near matched pair of Dayton Classic woofers. this presented a slight +2db/avg improvement in the 1st octave.
Ordered and installed these Dayton passive radiators (with 525 grams of weight pre-installed thus achieving a much lower 15.5Hz system resonance, Q=0.7, with the 354.7 litre cabinet volume).
The outcome was a drastic improvement in a new flat response from +/- 3.1db, 22Hz to 1khz with a 2.83v sine sweep in our 1600cf dedicated listening room.
This $240 experiment worked perfectly on paper and when installed, I never heard a loudspeaker system extend so low in LF output with no noticeable distortion artifacts down to 18Hz using a distortion analyzer.
In summary, I believe Brian Cheney (Mr. VMPS) would be impressed how loudspeaker components have improved in the last 35 years.
These VMPS super tower 2's are long term keepers and main loudspeakers now in my audiophile collection :)
Many thanks to PE for offering such a low price on high quality Dayton products !!! A++++
