Loved the TV series? This is much better!
Bernard Cornwell is a master at showing the battles and violence of the 9th century. You can almost believe you were there with his hero, Uhtred. Cornwell, however, tempers the horrors of war with evocative descriptions of the rural landscapes and builds strong and memorable characters.
