  • The book was one of those burned by Hitler and his cronies, surely this isn unequalled accolade?

On the Somme I tripped over a toffee apple (Mortar bomb the size of a football, orange in colour, with a long stalk, used to fire it from a stokes mortar, very aggressively I may add) I fell in barbed wire and was unable to move! My mind went straight into Remarque's book and it's realistic and un-glamorised view of war and it's effect on, especially young men!
