I have tried many different charcoal types, and this one was really good: very little smoke, has a good smell and gets fairly hot. I haven’t timed how long it burns, but I assume it’s similar to the average charcoal. Good chunks (largest ones are size of an apple) but also smaller pieces. However definitely better than the standard charcoal from the supermarket or DYI store.

This charcoal is not fully “carbon” and continues to emit an acrid smoke and smell well into the burning process. This makes it unsuitable for cooking roasts or slow cooks where you are trying to control the temperatures as you have to let the charcoal ALL burn well before you start cooking and you can’t add any fresh in during the cook. Ruined two roasts. The charcoal is clearly not fully “cured“ as many pieces are still brown in appearance and some when broken are actually woody. I have included a couple of pictures here of what came out the top of the bag but these are far from the worst. On the positive side, really good size lumps.

I tried this on 2 separate bbqs simultaneously. I started one batch with lighter gel in a pile. To maintain the flame I had to continously add gel, as the flames died down as soon as the gel burnt out. I tried this for 1/2 hr and when the coals were white started the food - within 20 min there was hardly any heat. I started the second batch in a weber can style starter with paper on the bottom. I had to repeatedly add gel for 30 min after which I got a very good flame. After cooking for 30 min the heat level was very low. Next day I could see that the majority of the lumps were only 25% consumed. Usually they burn out almost completely overnight. When I tried fanning during cooking I had to stop to avoid the food being covered with ash. I am a seasoned (35 yrs +) bbq'er and have rarely had charcoal as bad as this. I bought 2 12kg bags and will try and return as it was not fit for purpose. Read full review

I bbq a lot and buying stuff like this works out cheaper per kg than supermarket stuff, plus it lasts longer and you need less, so good all round. This is possibly the best I have tried, it chucks out a lot of heat is in nice big chunks and burns for a long time. Only issue is that occasional lumps seem to spit out a lot of 'sparks'. Annoying, but nothing serious. Will be ordering more soon.
