Author BiographyDaphne du Maurier (1907-89) was born in London, the daughter of the famous actor-manager Sir Gerald du Maurier and granddaughter of George du Maurier, the author and artist. In 1931 her first novel, The Loving Spirit, was published. A biography of her father and three other novels followed, but it was the novel Rebecca that launched her into the literary stratosphere and made her one of the most popular authors of her day. In 1932, du Maurier married Major Frederick Browning, with whom she had three children. Many of du Maurier's bestselling novels and short stories were adapted into award-winning films, including Alfred Hitchcock's The Birds and Nicolas Roeg's Don't Look Now. In 1969 du Maurier was awarded a DBE. She lived most of her life in Cornwall, the setting for many of her books.

    Worth a read.

This is a good read. The 1940 film is one of my all time favourites. I decided to keep an open mind. It’s a well written good story. The beginning is almost exactly the same as the film , but as the book progresses there are a few major differences which didn’t work for me. I probably would have given 5 stars if I hadn’t seen the film , which was the better of the two for me .

  • Rebecca by Daphne Du Maurier is a great read.

A wonderfully gripping story set many years ago, full of mystery and suspense. I bought this copy for my daughter to read in lockdown. Even the cover design is beautiful !

  • Not as expected

I expected the book in the photo which wasn’t the case which I didn’t mind. But the only thing that I was thoroughly disappointed with was the fact that it stated in the description that the book would be checked for hand writing. But clearly it hadn’t been checked because when I started reading the book I found several pages with handwriting. But other than that the book was a very good read. I am happy to keep the book but in future could they please check PROPERLY for handwriting and highlighting.

  • Haven’t started it yet but title Rebecca says it all.

If this book is as good as the last two Du Maurier books I have just read, which I understand it is, Wow I can’t wait to get started.

  • Superbly written classic literature

Possibly one of the finest books ever written. Beautifully crafted. Every word carefully chosen and each sentence constructed with expertise and a sensual knowledge of the subject. Highly recommended, but beware, it is long...
