not a sci-fi reader, but bought a book that sat on my bookshelf for years and only got around to reading it easier this year (Surface detail). It was fab, and then the kicker was finding out it was a series of books, so slowly, but really enjoying the process, I will read them all! very involved so need good regular reading to stay in the world(s) Ian M Banks created. Highly recommended

Not the run-of-the-mill "cowboys and indians in space" but the construction of a very alien galaxy where humans are not exactly human, the machines are not the enemy and there are really no heroes or heroines. If you able to ignore the allegorical lecturing about the future of our current society it is a gripping story.
