About this product

Product Information

Most people are repelled and intrigued by the images of cold-blooded, conscienceless murders that increasingly populate our movies, television programmes and newspaper headlines. With their flagrant criminal violation of society's rules, serial killers like Ted Bundy and John Wayne Gacy are among the most dramatic examples of the psychopath. Individuals with this personality disorder are fully aware of the consequences of their actions and know the difference between right and wrong, yet they are terrifyingly self-centred, remorseless and unable to care about the feelings of others. Perhaps most frightening, they often seem completely normal to unsuspecting targets - and they do not always ply their trade by killing. Presenting a portrait of these dangerous men and women based on 25 years of scientific research, the author describes a world of con artists, hustlers, rapists and other predators who charm, lie and manipulate their way through life. Are psychopaths mad, or simply bad? How can they be recognized? And how can we protect ourselves? This book provides information and insights for those seeking to understand this devastating condition.

    Oldy but goody

I’m sure the research has progressed since this book’s publication but the content and core ideas in this make an excellent read; well worth the purchase if you’re interested in psychology and/or criminology.

  • Most critical review

Superficial and has a very dated feel to it.

Although the book is informative on a basic level I felt that it was very repetative and overly reliant on padding out with examples of psychopathy from films, ancient crimes, and the authors personal history of working with criminals. he kept on referring to the Psychopathy Checklist, sometimes as much as four or five times on a single page. The book is a useful primer on the subject but it really does not have much depth to it. it was so lighweight that it could easily be read in a day, and had a distinct feel that it could have been written by an undergraduate.

  • Excellent realistic research and comprehensive information for anybody interested.

Informative and up-to-date information, realistic and not sensationalist, easy to understand yet still comprehensive and detailed. The number one book on pyschopaths NOT being just serial killers. For the lay-man as well as professionals.

  • Wow!!

We like ti think we know people and their behavIour, we all think we know those closest to us too, we all think we're slightly mad at times too and maybe have that psychotic element to ourselves. Well, until you've read this book you'll not know how bad some people in life truly can be. How much of a liar they are and how despite compelling evidence, they still deny doing wrong and build lie upon lie upon lie. From page one I was hooked and can't deacribe how much I loved this book. Thank you for opening my eyes to the madness of this world ;)

  • They are everywhere.

I wish I had read this book when I was 25. I now realise that I have worked for at least 5 psychopaths who all did real damage to peoples lives. Read learn and apply to everyone you meet. Good Luck.
