The highly-acclaimed sequel to H G Wells's The Time Machine, from the heir to Arthur C. Clarke. Written to celebrate the centenary of the publication of H G Wells's classic story The Time Machine, Stephen Baxter's stunning sequel is an outstanding work of imaginative fiction. The Time Traveller has abandoned his charming and helpless Eloi friend Weena to the cannibal appetites of the Morlocks, the devolved race of future humans from whom he was forced to flee. He promptly embarks on a second journey to the year AD 802,701, pledged to rescue Weena. He never arrives! The future was changed by his presence... and will be changed again. Hurled towards infinity, the Traveller must resolve the paradoxes building around him in a dazzling temporal journey of discovery. He must achieve the impossible if Weena is to be saved.

Time travel stories are difficult things. Especially when trying to write a sequel to the absolute classic Time Machine by Wells. I've tried another couple which attempted to follow HG's masterpeice but they failed to come near it. Stephen Baxter comes so damn close that you could be excused for thinking this is a lost manuscript rediscovered by the Wells' estate. Baxter finds exactly the right voice for the work. It feels like Wells wrote it - even down to the crisp sentence style, almost reportage, that he uses in places. He picks up and develops themes which Wells used in other works, like The Sleeper Wakes, and uses them deftly and appropriately: the "babble screens" spill trivia from the sky, for example. He never loses sight of the humanity of the central character and his concerns for Man's fate. Wells' fascination with air power is brilliantly covered, right down to the technical details of an Me 109 E fighter aircraft which would have fascinated HG. What's more, he takes up modern themes which would have been naturals for Wells: his treatment of AI is brilliant not only in its originality but also in the way he finds Wells' angle on it.. If you like H G Wells's work, particularly The Time Machine, then read this book, it is brilliant. Matter of fact, even if you have not heard of HG, read this book! It is one of the best science-fiction works of recent years.
