About this product

Product Information

The first popular biography of Edward I in a generation by a major new historian. This is the first major biography for a generation of a truly formidable king. Edward I is familiar to millions as 'Longshanks', conqueror of Scotland and nemesis of Sir William Wallace ('Braveheart'). Edward was born to rule England, but believed that it was his right to rule all of Britain. His reign was one of the most dramatic of the entire Middle Ages, leading to war and conquest on an unprecedented scale, and leaving a legacy of division that has lasted from his day to our own.In his astonishingly action-packed life, Edward defeated and killed the famous Simon de Montfort in battle; travelled across Europe to the Holy Land on crusade; conquered Wales, extinguishing forever its native rulers, and constructed - at Conwy, Harlech, Beaumaris and Caernarfon - the most magnificent chain of castles ever created. After the death of his first wife he erected the Eleanor Crosses - the grandest funeral monuments ever fashioned for an English monarch.

  • A heavyweight and very complete biography.

I have read quite a few biographies of English monarchs, but none so completely researched as this one. It is a big book, and takes a long while to read, simplly because of the depth of knowledge of the author, and the details of Edwards life. Excellent.

  • An excellent, well written account of the reign of Edward I

Marc Morris's book offers an excellent account of the reign of Edward I. It is very well researched and offers a chronological survey of this important period in British history in which Edward sought to unify the nation through the conquest of Wales and Scotland. Morris writes in an extremely clear style and makes use of maps which, unlike those in certain other modern history books, actually chart the location of all the key places mentioned in the text. There are also two sets of coloured photographs, an extensive biobliography, notes and genealogies of the English and Scottish dynasties together with a family tree of continental connections. There are one or two typographical errors (e.g. "it was all was gone", p. 32; and "were" for "where", p. 129). "Two" is redundant before "alternatives" (p. 199).

  • A Great and Terrible King: Edward 1 and the Forging of Britain.

Just what I needed to learn enough to give a talk about Edward 1 to my history group as we are studying The Plantagenet era and each of us chooses what particular aspect we would like to talk about.

  • Core text

Meticulously researched and entertainingly written. This happens to be the core reference book for students studying Edward I at GCSE, but will appeal to anyone with an interest in this most intriguing period.
