If you like "PI" novels, and haven't heard of John D MacDonald's "Travis McGee" series, I think you are in for a treat. Travis McGee is an intelligent protagonist with a laid-back lifestyle. He lives on a boat and takes work only when he needs the money to take more time in his "early retirement". Most of the time he is engaged to find things or people and takes a sizeable fee for doing so. Part of the appeal of this series is reading his inner monologue and witnessing the changes that take place to the mostly-Florida setting over the course of the 20 years or so that the series was written (mid-1960s to mid-1980s). It is worthwhile looking at the plaudits McDonald has received, and from whom, to get a more rounded and better-informed idea of just why it is worth investing the time, money and energy in following this series. Try The Deep Blue Goodby(e) and you will be in for a great read.Read full review
