A really great and honest account by a very brave man
This book is an absolute cracker! A riveting read from start to finish and an absolute goldmine to a Fleet Arm researcher such as myself - one of the best 'I was there' genre I have read to date. The author tells it as it was: warts-and-all, giving the reader a vivid picture of the operating conditions at the time during WW2 including the many difficulties, failings and even stupidity of the higher command structure. All this laced with stories of both high pathos and tragedy, mixed with those of pure comedy and even farce. The style of the writing, particularly its humor and pithy wit is instantly recognizable to anyone who has served in the Royal Navy - 'Jackspeak' at its best!
